Building Description

Reputed to be designed by Russell Warren noted 19th century Rhode Island architect Armory Hall is a one-story gable roof Gothic Revival Norman French structure with two hexagonal turrets with wooden castellated towers.  The two turrets are stucco covered brick and field stone.  Windows are double hung, diamond paned with lancet (arrow loop) windows in the two turrets.  The original one-story gable armory was symmetrical in design measuring 40’ x 35’ with walls made from native field stone.  The east end of the building was extended 13’ in 1874 in order to add a performing stage facing into the public hall.  In 1896 a utility room 14’ x 30’ was added to the northeast corner of the armory now called the 1896 Room.  Armory Hall is a unique historical armory in design with architectural features unlike any other armory in Rhode Island or elsewhere throughout the country.
